International scientific conference takes place in Novosibirsk State University of Architecture, Design and Arts (NSUADA) in Novosibirsk, Russia ones a year, in the middle of April. The central theme of the conference is an architectural heritage as a significant part of local and global culture. Together we explore Siberian architectural history (still rather terra incognita in whole Russian architecture) as well as architectural history of wide neighboring territories, theories and practices which developed there and could influence on processes in Siberia or not.

The Balandin Reading topics:

  1. Traditional settlements and dwellings. Architectural traditions preservation: theory and practice.
  2. Park museums as assemblers of traditional culture. Their history and development.
  3. Architecture, sculpture and pictural art. Art synthesis in world cultures.
  4. Cross-cultural and cross-regional relations in architecture and urban planning.
  5. Modern problems of preservation and actualization of historical buildings, complexes and sites. Ways to integrate historical objects into the 21st century reality.
  6. Heritage of architects and environment designers in museums. Researching and opportunities of the collections.
  7. Significant objects of architecture and urban planning in Siberia and neighboring areas. New information, revalorization and museumification as a way to preserve.
  8. The symbol and the sign in historical and architectural heritage of Siberia and neighboring territories (cultural and ethnographical aspects).
Special topics of 2026:
  1. The creative legacy of Andrey Dmitrievich Kryachkov. Kryachkov's projects and buildings in the cities of Siberia. New facts and interpretations.

  2. Architectural modernism in Siberia and the regions of the former USSR. The first and second waves of modernism. The phenomenon of "national" modernism.


Every year in October the Balandin Reading annals with all the conference papers are published. The annals are included in Russian part of Russian Scientific Citation Index, CyberLeninka and Google Scholar. All the articles get DOI.

The conference was founded in the Museum of Siberian Architectural History of NSUADA in 2006 in the memory of Sergey Balandin — Dr. habil. in architecture, Honored architect of Russia. The Balandin Reading first coordinator and ideologist was Tatiyana Tarnovskaya, a head of the museum.


From year to year Balandin Reading got more and more participants and visitors. In 2019 during three days of the conference researchers from 17 Russian cities, Yerevan and Almaty made 104 reports. Balandin Reading is a platform where leading scientists and young researchers, theorists and experts meet each other, and everyone can get professional feedback on his research work.  

In 2019 Novosibirsk Regional Governmental Inspection of Heritage Preservation and National University of Architecture and Construstion of Armenia became the conference partners.

The Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian branch of Russian Academy of Sciences is the partner of Balandin Reading since 2012. In 2018 with the help of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (project No 18-09-00469) a special part of Balandin Reading was held, dedicated to new methods of studying historical and architectural heritage (you can find video here (in Russ.))
